What to do when you lose power

Living in Massachusetts, we are no strangers to seeing the power go out. Whether it is a hurricane or tropical storm in the summer or a blizzard in the winter, it is important to have a plan for when you lose power. Prepare a power outage kit

Preparation can always help you out later on. We highly recommend that every home have a power outage kit or some supplies for when the power goes out. This includes flashlights, batteries, and an emergency radio. If a large storm is on its way, and the weather reporters are warning you that there could be extensive power outages, you should also fill your bathtubs with water. When the power is out, your water sanitation system will not be operating. So this is a safe way to store drinking water.

Unplug Electronics

Once the power goes out and you have distributed flashlights to all of your family, you should begin unplugging electronics and switching lights off. When the power comes back on there could be a surge that could damage your electronics. This is especially true for computers and phones. After losing power, you should check on your neighbors, take a look outside, and call either your power company or an emergency electrician. The first thing you want to find out is if your entire neighborhood lost power or if it was just you or a few homes. If it is just a few homes, you should call an electrician to come out.

Long-Term Outage Advice

In some cases, when a large portion of a state loses power, it can be days or even over a week before everyone gets power back. If you live far from major populated areas, you should consider owning and installing a backup generator. This can give power to your refrigerator as well as help keep other essentials operating. If you do not own a generator, you should keep your refrigerator closed as often as possible. You should eat refrigerator food first, followed by freezer food, followed by canned and non-perishable food. Dairy items should be the first to go, as they will spoil the quickest.
