When To Call An Emergency Electrician

Whether you are a small business owner, a tenant in an apartment building, or a homeowner, it is important to know who to call in the event of an emergency. Generally speaking, we all know to call 911 for medical emergencies, fires, and similar problems. But in some cases, you will need to call emergency plumbers, animal control, or an emergency electrician. As emergency electricians in the Greater Boston area, we often get asked, “when should I call 911 and when should I call an emergency electrician”? It’s a great question, and a general rule of thumb is that in cases where someone’s life is in immediate danger, 911 is usually the best bet. But here are a few situations where calling an emergency electrician is the right course of action.

Who To Call If You Have An Electrical Fire

There are a few signs of an electrical fire. Sparks, flames, smoke, and browning around outlets and light switches are all signs of an electrical fire. If there is flames, smoke, or sparks, you should call your local fire department at 911 immediately. However, if there is no immediate danger, but you notice browning around your outlet covers you should call an emergency electrician. It is likely that the wiring in your building is outdated and needs to be replaced. There are a few things that can potentially cause electrical fires, and dealing with them as soon as you notice the symptoms is the best way to avoid an actual fire. So if you notice browning around an outlet or a light switch but there is no fire, call an electrician who specializes in emergencies.

Who To Call If You Have A Power Outage

Lights go out? First things first, did it go out for everyone or just for you? If the entire country, street, or surrounding buildings have all lost power, you should either call your electrical company or a nearby electrician. In cases where a storm knocks out power countrywide, electrical companies will already be at work to bring back power. But if your power is exclusively off there are two courses of action to take. First, if you are comfortable around a circuit breaker or a fusebox, you can try and restore power yourself, it is possible that you lost power due to the safety features of your circuit breaker. Alternatively, you can call an electrician to come out and help restore power. If you consistently lose power (and it is specifically your building) this is a sign that your electrical system is incapable of meeting the electrical demands of your building. You will likely need an electrician to perform an inspection.
